A challenge for mobile recycling in confinded but busy site

PALOMAR AIRPORT, CALIFORNIA. Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar Airport is one of the busiest single runway airports in the nation and serves the metropolitan area of northern San Diego County and the Southern California region in general. More than 400 aircraft, including a significant number of corporate jets are based at the facility.

It's not unusual to see multi-million dollar jets standing ready for takeoff at this air field. At the end of 2005, changes have been made to the runway safety area. The renovation was part of an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration allowing expanded commuter service for the airport. The project included extending the runway east to meet the FAA-required over run lengths. 600 feet was added to the west end of the runway along with an additional 200 feet on to the east end. Large areas of taxiway and aircraft parking areas were removed to make room for the new aviation related buildings. This created a large amount of concrete and asphalt demolition waste that needed to be dealt with. Because the area was very confined and the runway and taxiways must remain open this created the perfect environment for the Rubble Master RM80.

Elms Equipment Rental, Inc. – a long-term RUBBLE MASTER sales partner – contacted the owner of AMG Demolition & Environmental of San Diego, CA about RM products just when he had a project he wanted to try an RM80 on. 12,000 short tons of concrete and asphalt from the old taxiways and aircraft parking areas at Palomar Airport had to be processed within one month. An ideal task for the mobile RUBBLE MASTER impact crusher. The left over material was sorted, prepared up to a feed size of up to 24” and processed directly at the job site – though in a very confined area. Despite the fact, that all equipment activity had to stop as each aircraft passed by- because their wings were actually projecting up to ten feet into the work area - work progressed steadily.

The high performance but compact impact crusher was mated with the OS80 oversize screen. The comb cascades of the OS80 reliably separate oversize material – to produce high quality, 1” minus material meeting stringent specifications, with maximum throughput and minimum wear thanks to the optimized pre-setting of the crusher. The OS80 is simply mounted on the main discharge belt of the crusher using quick release levers. Thus it maintains the freedom of movement on the job site – an advantage that cannot be matched by any other comparably compact machine. The RM80 requires only one low-bed (five axles in California) load to transport the complete package to and from the jobsite.

The 1” minus material was then re-used as base course under the new taxi way and aircraft parking area. As a direct result of other customers seeing this project ELMS Equipment Rental Inc. were able to successfully demonstrate the RM80 to Delcon Materials, of Stockton CA, who is crushing reject concrete pavers, leading to a sale of a new RM80. Right after this project this RM80 was used to crush some natural rock a few miles away for the new trolley station in Oceanside, CA.
